This minimizes strain on the shoulders and therefore also on the back.
PRACTICAL OPENINGS FOR QUICK ACCESS
Pockets on the shoulder straps and hip fins have space for a bottle, energy bars, a cell phone or GPS device. Quick-release bungee draw cords on the shoulder straps provide fast on-the-move access to poles without having to take the pack off. So you don’t have to break stride.
