Unlike with the Mercury mitten, where the outer shell is just leather and nylon, without insulation, in the Absolute mitten the outer mitt is extensively insulated. Indeed, the Absolute outer mitt by itself is, in my opinion, a warmer mitten than the Mercury complete. You needn't buy both. Further, since the Absolute outer mitt is so commodious, you can wear one or two glove liners, or most any not-too-thick glove, inside it, letting you whip off the outer mitt and obtain dexterity but still some warmth. And, of course, when it gets really cold, use the Absolute inner mitt. The only functional problem with the 2013 version of the mitt is that the gauntlet cinch takes two hands to operate, unlike the Mercury one which uses the one-handed pull system. Wonder why they didn't put that in the Absolute?? Can this be retrofitted? Style-wise, I prefer the deep weaving in the Mercury nylon, and the much larger BD logo to the flat nylon and small logo in the Absolute. The larger reflective logo is safer if you use it on streets. But those are just nits.

These mitts are enormous, and enormously warm. Having said that, they are surprisingly tactile and hold ski poles and skidoo handles well. I am not a big fan of the BD need to separate the trigger finger in the liner. Lobster mitts are available and guess which finger takes the longest to warm up. My arctic pals use liner gloves inside their mitts for brief on/off fine motor skills work and this system does not work very well in fingered liners. I have had my liner resewn.
